The Arctic Sky Has Turned Red! And suddenly the night sky became red… blood red! Awesome picture by Ruslan Merzyakov in Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.
Ruslan Merzyakov explains ’Night till Monday was totally mind-blowing. Never have I ever seen such red Aurora, but magical Svalbard made it happen.‘ The aurora is a natural light display that occurs in the polar regions. It is caused by charged particles from space catapulted down magnetic field lines into our upper atmosphere, where they collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms to produce light. This process is driven by energy from the sun, which comes as a stream of charged particles called the solar wind that interacts with Earth’s magnetic field. The aurora is most often seen as a green color, perhaps rippling or twisting. To achieve a brilliant red or the fabled violets or crimsons, the aurora generally requires more energy and is much rarer.
The light from the aurora stretches up hundreds of kilometers in the a…
China Plans to Launch an 'Artificial Moon' to Light Up the Night Skies Moonlit skies over the Chinese city of Chengdu may soon get a boost from a second moon.
City officials recently announced plans to build an artificial moon, launching it to hang over Sichuan province's capital city by 2020, Chinese news site People's Daily Online (PDO) reported.
The illuminated orb is intended to complement the light of Earth's existing moon, and will be eight times brighter than the natural satellite, Wu Chunfeng, chairman of Chengdu Aerospace Science and Technology Microelectronics System Research Institute Co. Ltd. (CASC) — the primary contractor for the Chinese space program — told PDO. [Photos: Mysterious Objects Spotted on the Moon]
In fact, light from the artificial moon is expected to save the city money by doing away with the need for streetlights, Chunfeng added. The new moon will be capable of illuminating an area of up to 50 miles (80 kilometers) in diameter, accordi…
Metal object that fell from sky in Hanford identified
Folks in Hanford have some answers for what fell out of the sky last Saturday.
Kings County sheriff's deputies were called out to the area of 8th and Houston avenues on Oct. 13.
The owner of a walnut orchard found a metal object in his orchard.
Detectives eventually reached out to Vandenberg Air Force Base and learned the object was likely to be a fuel tank from a communications satellite owned by Iridium.
According to Iridium, the tank was identified coming from Iridium satellite No. 70.
That satellite was launched into space sometime in late 1997 or early 1998.
It is the first piece recovered from an Iridium satellite re-entering Earth's atmosphere and will be closely examined.
Hurricane Michael evacuee spots trapped uncle's H-E-L-P message on NOAA satellite map As hundreds of rescuers combed the Florida Panhandle for missing people in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael, Amber Gee found her uncle and aunt when she used a government interactive satellite map and spotted their H-E-L-P message on the family's front lawn.
Gee, a mother of a 2-year-old girl and 3-month-old boy, evacuated her home in Callaway, Florida, just south of hard-hit Panama City on Thursday, a day after the category 4 storm made landfall. She assumed her relatives followed suit.
But on Saturday, she was searching the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration interactive satellite map and to her astonishment saw the word H-E-L-P spelled out in logs on her grandmother's lawn in Youngstown, northeast of Panama City.
Her uncle, Ernest Gee, had used trees knocked down by the hurricane to cobble together the S.O.S., she told ABC News on Sunday.
"I was checking on damages in…

UPDATE on China's Artificial Moon,
Orbits and Lighting Level Diagrams Released Man-made moon to shed light on Chengdu in 2020
China's space industry is preparing to launch the world's first artificial moon to help with urban illumination at night, a leading scientist said.
China plans to put an artificial moon in orbit above Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan by 2020. If the launch proves successful, three more such objects will be launched in 2022, Wu Chunfeng, head of Tian Fu New Area Science Society in Chengdu, told China Daily in an exclusive interview on Thursday.
The artificial moon will have a reflective coating that can reflect sunlight back to Earth, similar to how the moon shines, he said.

Very bright meteor illuminates the night sky over Hokkaido, Japan A very bright meteor was seen and recorded over Hokkaido, Japan at 11:56 UTC (20:56 local time) on October 19, 2018. The event lasted several seconds before the object disintegrated.
Fumitake Watanabe, an engineer at an observatory in the city of Nayoro, said the fireball appears to have been caused by an object such as a fragment of an asteroid burning up in the Earth's atmosphere.
"Judging from the light, the object appears to have burned up before reaching the Earth's surface," Watanabe said. Very bright fireball over Hokkaido, Japan on October 19, 2018. All images courtesy NHK
Ex-Hurricane Michael Expected to Hit NW Spain Tomorrow Morning, Oct 15th, 2018 Another interesting event coming for Iberian peninsula tonight and Monday morning. Remnants of the ex-hurricane Michael have re-organized again the past 24 hours into a new extra-tropical cyclone and are nearing the Bay of Biscay tonight. While weakening, the cyclone is expected to hit NW Spain tomorrow morning and bring some rain and gusty winds into the region.
Evening IR satellite image of ex-Michael approaching NW Iberian peninsula. Remnants of extra-tropical storm Leslie are visible over the eastern half of Spain as well, resulting in excessive rainfall with severe storms along the cold front. Below is also a 500 MB chart analysis as 12 UTC today: both systems are easily visible as short-wave troughs. The surface analysis reveals the central pressure around 992 mbar this evening, while Michael was even deeper (around 982 mbar) earlier today further west and has been weakening since then.
